All Poetry All the Time!

Check it out - a new gotpoetry feature at GotPoetry Radio … all poetry, all the time.

Victor Infante’s Inaugural Radio Show

Victor Infante, Scott Woods, Marc Smith, Susan B. A. Somers Willet talking about the birth and evolution of slam - where it’s been, where it is, where it’s going. Don’t ask questions - just go listen.

New Video - Rainmaker @ the Lizard Lounge

Rainmaker is an NYC poet who was traveling recently. I caught him in a slam at the Lizard Lounge three Sundays ago. It was possibly the highest scoring slam I’ve ever attended, thanks to the efforts of Harlym 125 coaxing 10 - 10 - TEN! out of the judges.

Gearing up for Podcamp!

Last year I had the pleasure of attending the first Boston Podcamp - a weekend of camaraderie, networking and picking up lots of useful tips about how to podcast and vlog. This year, the Podcamp guys are doing it again. I’m making plans to attend - already registered - and am looking for hookups with area spoken word artists and poets. Maybe we can take advantage of the venue to stage our own Podcamp Slam for points and prizes?

This year’s Boston Podcamp will be held Oct 26-28 at the Boston Convention and Expo Center. Learn more about it at the Boston Podcamp blog and register at this link. Sign up, lemme know you’ll be there and we’ll see what we can arrange for meetups and maybe a poetic event!

Cole @ the Lizard Lounge

  • Got new video up - thanks to Cara. Sunday nights are hot at the Lizard Lounge, and this lady is part of the reason. Cole Rodriguez is a Boston local spoken word artist with hard hitting rhyme and slam style.

Cantab June 20 - Esme Vaandrager and 8×8 Slam

A bunch of new vids from the Wednesday night Cantab Slam.

  • Boston’s Cantab Slam has been in continuous operation since 1992, making it one of the oldest slam venues in the nation. The Cantab has sent a team to the Nationals every year since the inception of the Nationals in 1992, and they’ve walked off with the whole shebang more than once. In 2004, Michael Brown handed over hosting duties to Simone Beaubien, an incredible poet and performer in her own right. These days, Simone shares hosting duties with Ryk McIntyre, Adam Stone, Brian Ellis, Dawn Gabriel and J*me (if I’ve forgotten someone, they have my permission to ridicule me from the stage at the Cantab any Wednesday night when I am in the audience).
  • Wednesday night was a typical Boston Poetry Slam night at the Cantab. The room was crowded, the energy was high, and the poets were incredible. The open mike ran well past 10 pm - not unusual at the Cantab, which commonly features one of the longest open mike lists in the area. The feature was Esme Vandraager, an incredible young poet from New Mexico who is both inspiring and endearing. Unfortunately, I got no video of Esme, since I hadn’t had a chance to ask her permission in advance, but I’ll be working on that. If you have a chance to hear Esme, grab it. The girl puts on a performance that has the audience alternately cheering and awww-ing and wiping away tears. Her Letter to My Grandmother, delivered partly in Spanish and partly in English, held the whole audience under a spell of silence, and when she announced that she was reading her final two pieces, the entire room protested. Esme will be the feature at the Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam on Sunday July 1. If you’re in the area, you should be there.
  • New stuff added to the playlist from the Slam @ the Cantab:

    More to come as I get permission to post them from the poets!

  • Oh. I promise the videos will get better as I get used to using the new cheapie camera that makes it soo soo easy to do this!
  • Till next time!

New Video - Taalam Acey - Market 4 Niggaz

||Listen to Taalam Acey - Market 4 Niggaz||

New to me, at least. Taalam Acey is one of the hottest poets on the Spoken Word tour circuit. He’s heading into a whirlwind summer tour and is probably coming to a city near you. You can check out his upcoming tour dates at Taalam’s myspace page. In the meantime, get a little taste of what Taalam is about…

Favorite Poems - e. e. cummings

||Listen to dying is fine)but Death||

  • E. E. Cummings is a long time favorite poet of mine. His poem dying is fine)but Death uses his usual liberal hand with punctuation. When you listen to it, though, the punctuation makes perfect sense.

Tony Brown - Punk

||Listen to “Punk”||
||Listen to “Snakes on a Plane”||

  • Yes, listen. Tony is a Worcester area poet who has been a vital part of the poetry scene both at home and nationally for over a dozen years. He’s a self-professed original punk, and his poem Punk expresses his feelings about what punk is and does and has done.
  • These days, Tony often collaborates with an amazing bass player, Stephen Cafaro aka Faro. The pair call themselves Duende, and they are amazing. Snakes on a Plane features Tony backed by Faro on bass. Enjoy!
